Good, solid stuff here. I've used the delaying tactic on purchasing things, but not any kind of consistently with alcohol - I'll have to give that a try.
On hardcore food fasting: if anyone is planning on completely abstaining from food for 24 hours or more, a few things I have found helpful (not medical advice, talk to your doctor, and all that): before the day you start your fast, eat dinner relatively early, and try not to go too nuts with carbs (bread, pasta, potatoes, etc), also stay away from booze. Sleep in if you can, and during the day, try to go for a nice, long walk (30 minutes+, ideally). Make sure to drink lots of water, and you likely want to put some salt in it, potassium if you can get it (many electrolyte supplements are sweetened, but if your goal is total calorie restriction, you'll want to avoid that. LMNT makes tasty zero-calorie electrolyte powders). All of this will likely help your body get past burning up the leftover sugar in your muscles and liver and start making ketones out of your fat. If you're going to do a water/minimal broth fast for longer than a day or two, you very likely want to get into ketosis as quickly as possible to avoid being miserable. You might still get some sore muscles (especially in the back), but the walking and water should help with that. If you really need to maintain energy levels and want to avoid as much discomfort as possible (which might partially be missing the point, in this context), you can also buy Exogenous Ketone supplements, which your body can use for energy while you're adjusting (don't take more than 2-3 doses in a day though, as they are a bowel irritant).

Anyhow, hope that helps!
