I wondered if anyone would pick up on that! My notion is that the Sublunar Demiurge is himself triadic. At first he is a devil, a figure of Cythraul, who holds our souls in bondage. Then he becomes a figure more like Arawn, the tester. If the test is overcome he manifests as Cernunnos, a wise teacher, who also aids us in attaining what we need from the material world/the Earth element. That interpretation of the serpent hadn't occurred to me, but it makes perfect sense. Holding the torc in the other hand while he sits in meditation could be seen as demonstrating mastery of both the appetitive and the social parts of the soul-- the serpent is the epithymia, the torc, symbol of kingship, the thymos.
