I am not sure where the counterclockwise movement derives from, but that would be interesting to investigate (I think, also, of the various directions of Dante's travels in the Comedy). Your association of it with the Golden Age is provocative and potentially revealing, IMO.
To your larger point: I guess a less controversial take on it overall might be that these myths, like the "prisca theologia," anticipate in some way the truths that would become fully manifest in Christianity...
