You see the same patterns work out in antisemites, for example, who discuss the actions of "Jews" as though Jewish identity included no subcategories, and as though there were no Jewish individuals. And you see the same kind of thing at work when elite universities accept large numbers of Nigerians or Nigerian-Americans for admission in order to boost the number of "black" students on their rosters, eliding the difference between Nigerians and descendants of African slaves.
