He's talking about karmic culmination, of course-- the process whereby your life tends to blow up shortly after getting seriously into spiritual work, so that you're forced to clear up unfinished business and make changes you've been avoiding. There's definitely something to being content with getting only so far in a particular lifetime. I see this as one of the great benefits of the idea of reincarnation-- there's no need to rush spiritual development, you have all the time in the world.
