Just wanted to let you know that this post came almost immediately after I had just finished writing to somebody my self-disappointment in not being able to keep up meditation practice-- and I specifically mentioned how missing a day takes the wind out of my sails, and can result in me going months without trying again. Ah, sweet synchronicity. I have heard this advice before, but it's not only a good reminder, I've never actually considered what would happen if I applied the idea of a set minimum practice (which was introduced to me as the "just put on your shoes" rule, as in committing to just put on shoes rather than a whole run) to more or less everything in my life.

You said "Unfortunately, the culture of most 12-step groups is to focus on accumulating continuous days, months, and years of sobriety, and so treats any relapse as a return to Day 1." ]

Is there a different way that is effective? Certainly, though streaks seem like a really effective incentive when you're in the middle of them, they are pretty deadly when you interrupt one.
