The idea that the modern left is a direct continuation of either Puritanism and/or Marxism gets a fair amount of traction on the fringier end of the right these days. I think Curtis Yarvin popularized the idea, even going so far as to suggest that Marxism branched off the Puritan tradition still in England, and now more recently has merged back into the tradition descended from the American Puritans (roughly speaking: Puritans -> Transcendentalists -> Early 20th century Progressives -> New Deal -> Today's Left).
