For what it's worth, some years ago I had a girlfriend who had grown up in a fairly WASP-y sort of home environment, and one year I brought her home for Christmas. I'd spent the previous Christmas with her family. It consisted of a visit by several cousins and uncles lasting about 3 hours. Her dad was visibly uncomfortable that one of the uncles brought over a bottle of liquor. She was shocked to discover that Christmas with my family began on Christmas Eve and went through New Years, with literally dozens of people awake drinking at my grandma's house until 3am some nights!
