I enjoyed it, and it did help explain *some* things (the marked difference between the accents in Hampton, VA, Blakely, GA, and Bryson City, NC... even though to hear most people talk, it's all "the South"), but at the same time I found it frustrating because, naturally, I couldn't find a place in that scheme to slot in my own family, even though most of them have been here a while. Do pre-revolutionary Swiss/German migrants from Baden who went straight to Georgia have any influence on the culture? What about the Welsh? Perhaps not. We cannot help but feel left out(sniff). But the book was like 900 pages already, so probably that's too much to expect ;)
