The suggestion of planning a substitution useful action seems to me perfectly valid in the case of internet pornography, but in the case of reading the news, or even, depending on one's situation, the Facebook feed example (musicians got to keep light acquaintances going to their shows somehow), we actually need to do these things at least sometimes. These two might be examples better treated with the method I just tentatively explored in my comment on your 2.24.21 reflection: making the task of reading the news or checking one's Facebook feed explicitly a "military action" done as one soldier's action in coordination with the rest of their squadron; the action would be just a single part of a set defined mission with certain tactical goals. Mindless scrolling without advancing toward the goal would need to be considered putting the entire squadron at risk, giving extra incentive to just do the necessary part of the task; and also, the other soldiers probably would keep the newsreading soldier in line if they got lost. (Perhaps set a timer, with another psychologically urgent-seeming task to do at the end of it?)
